The Purple Rose of Virgo

eso (the european southern observatory) just released this beautiful image of spiral galaxy ngc 5584, located west of the virgo galaxy cluster. also visible in the image, at the lower right of the center of the galaxy, is supernova SN 2007 af, the 32nd and brightest supernova discovered this year. a beautiful thing.
