The State of Science Education
A nice essay by physicist and astronomer Lawrence Krauss (author of Atom, Quintessence, and the Physics of Star Trek, among others) regarding the recent vote in Kansas that placed creationists in the minority on the state school board. Though this may seem like an important victory, Krauss points to the more general phenomenon of having scientifically illiterate individuals in charge of curriculum development. There are enough challenges facing education in general, and science education in particular, and in order to ensure progress we need to make sure that elected school officials have an understanding of contemporary science.
